Gun violence in America is a public health crisis. While statistics on the relationship between gun violence and mental illness vary greatly, research shows that anger, hostility and frustration, violent media exposure, and environmental factors like population overcrowding play important roles. The cycle of violence in families also demonstrates a desensitization that causes an increased likelihood that violence will be used to resolve conflict. This session will examine the factors that contribute to gun violence and, without judgement about the debate on gun control, offer recommendations on what professionals can do about it.
